On May 15 each year, the world marks the International Day of Families, established by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 47/237 in 1993. This day provides a key opportunity to raise awareness of issues related to families and highlight the socio-economic and demographic trends shaping family well-being.
In 2025, the International Day of Families is dedicated to the theme of advancing family-friendly policies as part of national development programmes that effectively address global challenges — including technological shifts, demographic transitions, urbanization, migration, and climate change.
In Uzbekistan, a large-scale community event took place on 16 May 2025 to commemorate this occasion. It was organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in collaboration with the National Agency for Social Protection under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Safia Cafe & Bakery.
The family is not only a source of strength for individuals but also the cornerstone of a sustainable and just society. Within its global mandate to protect the rights, health, and well-being of women, youth, and vulnerable populations, UNFPA advocates for the creation of inclusive, safe, and resilient family models.
The event aimed to highlight the role of families as spaces of love, support, equality, and mutual understanding. Special emphasis was placed on promoting an environment in which every family — regardless of social background or life circumstances — feels valued and heard.
More than 1,000 participants joined the celebration, which featured a rich and diverse programme, including:
-
Handicraft fair showcasing products from over 30 women artisans, including works made by children with disabilities and women who have experienced difficult life situations;
-
Family contests and activities, including themed zones for fathers and daughters, playgrounds, and quizzes for all ages;
-
Creative workshops such as art therapy, face painting, and gingerbread cookie decorating — designed to spark imagination and promote quality family time;
-
Interactive entertainment programme with hosts, live music, games, and prizes;
-
Relaxation and conversation areas thoughtfully designed for informal interaction and enjoyable leisure time.
The event served as an inspiring example of how collaborative efforts between the government, international organizations, and the private sector can promote family values, strengthen social cohesion, and support sustainable development.
